George Yengi's 30th Birthday
George Yengi came to Australia from South Sudan (via Uganda) about 17 years ago this year. Since then he has lived in a number of states, met thousands of people, made many lasting and important friendships, played a lot of soccer, completed high school, a degree, worked, and created a wonderful life that we now share.
One thing he hasn't done is return to his homeland. His mum still lives there, and they've not seen each other since before he left, and they've not spoken, except for once. While he'd love to go back for many reasons, this is the big one.
A number of things have kept him from going, finances, circumstances, life, but now, for his 30th birthday I think we all have a chance to give him a pretty special gift. If everybody contributes to this registry before the 2nd of October this year, on his birthday, he'll get the gift of his lifetime. Enough funding so that he can see and explore where he comes from, and have some fun too!
I don't plan on booking anything until he knows about it, so he can be involved in the planning of the trip. Until then, this is to be kept absolutely secret from him.
For a trip lasting maybe 3 weeks, I'm guessing the following costs would need to be covered:
Flights - this is variable, and depends which way we decide to travel....Obviously by plane, but which route.
I'm approximating $3000 per person.
Accomodation - There will be time spent with family, staying with them, but incase there times we're not I'd like to have maybe $2000
Food/Drink - Goes without saying, maybe another $2000
Spending/Fun Money - another $3000
While we intend to spend time with the family, it'd be nice to be able to see some of the wonderful touristy things to see around Africa. George has told me that he'd very much like to do that.
SO, my ambitious target is $10,000. Thats a lot right? But thats just 100 people with $100, or 150 people with $67, or 200 people with $50. If we get more, I'll be beyond grateful.
I know that this would be a life changing thing for George, and if this gets us anywhere close to enabling him to see his mother again and see where he's from, I think it would be just amazing.
Contact me if you have any queries, at this stage there are no plans for a 30th Party, I'm sure that will all come together a little closer to the date. It would be at this event that we all get to reveal this gift, and see George's face when he receives it. I can't wait!
I also think it'd be nice to give George a card, or a book, made up with short messages from everyone who contributed. If you'd like to be a part of it, please email your message to me at [email protected] and I'll include it in the book I create.
Big love in advance to all who get involved,
